We’re on the Governor’s Desk!

Last February, the California Legislature introduced three new bills aimed at advancing healthy, sustainable, and climate-resilient schools. Together, these bills address critical infrastructure gaps on school campuses, including classroom cooling, shade on schoolyards, and backup power during grid emergencies.

We are thrilled to announce that these three bills are now on Governor Newsom’s desk, awaiting his signature. This is a tremendous milestone for our network, but the work isn't done yet. We need your help to encourage Governor Newsom to sign these bills into law. Your voice can make a difference!

SB 1182 (Gonzalez), the Climate Resilient Schools Act, will make California the first state with a plan to ensure safe, healthy, resilient campuses amidst increasing extreme weather and heat.

Take Action: Use our call script to call Governor Newsom’s office at 916-445-2841 and ask him to sign SB 1182!

SB 1374 (Becker) will restore the benefits of solar to schools and renters – ensuring that schools can use the solar energy they produce onsite.

Take Action: Join the Statewide Day of Action for Solar at Schools on Thursday, September 5!

SB 1091 (Menjivar) will make it easier for schools to implement schoolyard greening projects – providing more children with shade and comfortable outdoor learning spaces.

Take Action: Sign the letter that will go to Governor Newsom asking him to sign this bill.

No matter the outcome, this legislative session has been a win because we continued to advance and elevate the campaign for climate ready schools. Not only will projects that promote climate resilience and decarbonization be eligible for state bond funding should Proposition 2 pass in November, but California lawmakers considered our coalition’s three bills over the last eight months, and at each committee hearing and floor vote they affirmed their commitment to healthy, safe, resilient, decarbonized school buildings and grounds. We counted over 520 ‘aye’ votes.

This a win no matter which way you slice it; let’s keep the pressure on over the next 30 days to ensure these bills are signed into law.
