Statement from Climate Ready Schools Coalition - Earth Day 2023

This Earth Day provides an opportunity to recognize how fast our climate is changing and the threat to student health and learning in schools – especially for already vulnerable students.

Now, more than ever, California needs an equity-focused master plan for climate-resilient schools that will ensure coordination, funding, and implementation support so that our school buildings and grounds provide safe and healthy learning environments for ALL our children.

Earlier this week, the California Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee unanimously supported SB 394, a bill introduced by Senator Lena Gonzalez to develop a Master Plan for Climate-Resilient Schools. We applaud Senator Gonzalez and the Committee members for recognizing this critical need and for taking action.

We look forward to working with the legislature and Governor Newsom to pass this important legislation for the future of our state’s school children.
